Heights Emergency Food Center

Located within Disciples Christian Church, the Heights Emergency Food Center (HEFC) was opened in October of 1981 with the aid of the Heights Interfaith Council. We began by serving nine families that month and now provide more than 575 families with a three day supply of food once each month.

Our telephone number is 216.381.0707.

OUR MISSION:
Heights Emergency Food Center is a non-profit corporation, staffed by volunteers to provide for people in emergency situations. Committed to Judeo-Christian principles, the center respects social and cultural diversity and upholds the worth and dignity of those it serves.

WHO WE SERVE:
HEFC currently serves residents of Cleveland Heights, University Heights, South Euclid and Lyndhurst.

WHO QUALIFIES?
The income guidelines, as set by the U. S. Department of Agriculture, are followed by HEFC. Those who find themselves in emergency situations and are referred by a doctor, clergy or social worker are also served.

All clients with proper documentation are served equally. The amount of food is determined by size of household and availability of supply. The "household unit" is anyone living at the same address, apartment, house, or having some documented aid number such as MEDAID, EBT Card, or Department of Human Services documentation. The HEFC workers determine eligibility and have final option to determine to service clients.

OUR OPERATION AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT:
We provide a valuable and needed service to the communities we serve. The HEFC. is run by a volunteer Board of Trustees and a dedicated staff of volunteers. The time they give to the Food Center each month is greatly appreciated. There is also a need for volunteers, both to work in the Center and to sit on the Board of Trustees. If you are able to help one day a month, please contact the Center at 216.381.0707 during our hours of operation.

OUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT:
Financial contributions and donations of food are the main source of support for the HEFC. They are always needed and gratefully received. Our financial support, from the communities we serve, comes from religious institutions; service and social organizations; public, parochial and private schools; federal grants and supermarket settlements; and individuals. We use the resources of the Northeast Ohio Food Bank, a purchasing agent for non-profit
agencies. This enables the purchase of five dollars worth of food for each dollar donated. 100% of donations to HEFC is spent on food. Community Development Block Grant funds from the City of Cleveland Heights currently cover our overhead expenses and Disciples Christian Church generously provides our home.
